The original Morris Island Lighthouse was ordered to be built in 1767 by King George III.  During the civil war the lighthouse was destroyed.
In 1873 a new 150 foot tower would become what is today Morris Island Lighthouse.  In 1880 the lighthouse stood 2,700 feet from the water.  In an effort to form a deeper channel  3 mile jetties were constructed.  The lighthouse saw the sand on which it stood slowly erode leaving it 1,600 feet off shore.  Today the lighthouse is slipping into the sea.  It is
located on Morris Island in South Carolina.
